Welcome to my website

My name is John Smith and, however you have found your way here, I welcome you to my website. At the risk of seeming off-putting, let me follow my greeting with a few cautionary words:

Do not read on if you are completely happy with everything in your classroom and in your school.

You may consider this suggestion a little provocative but I want to signal from the outset that, although I have huge admiration for the work of the many hundreds of teachers and other educational practitioners I have met and worked with over the course of my career, I think we can always make things better for the children we teach. Moreover, I am confident that this sentiment is shared by every good teacher I have ever met. One more fantastic bonus is that doing this tends to make the adults in school enjoy their jobs better too. The central belief which underpins my current work is that children and their teachers would benefit by making their classrooms and schools into what I call Learning and Growth Communities. For a quick overview of this proposal, go to the page entitled Quick Summary. You can find out even more if you decide to become part of the first group of schools to be involved with me in developing this approach in your own setting (details on the page entitled What I can offer).  On other pages of this website I shall say something about myself, my work and other relevant information.  I hope therefore, that you find something of interest in these pages.  If you have any comments or queries please contact me at:
